Two kids take parents' Range Rover for 100-mile joyride
(Web Desk) - Police in New York have revealed that a 12-year-old boy embarked on an ambitious 100-mile joyride in his parents’ Range Rover Evoque with his 7-year-old cousin in the passenger seat.
Authorities report that the 12-year-old drove the Range Rover from his home on 115th Street in South Ozone Park, Queens, across the Verrazzano Bridge and into New Jersey at around 11 a.m. on December 8. Shortly after crossing into New Jersey, state troopers flashed their lights and sirens to try and get the boy to pull over but he sped off. They opted against pursuing the Range Rover for the safety of the children. CBS Local reports that at 2:15 pm that same day, the boy tried using his dad’s credit card to buy cookies at a rest stop near the Delaware border. The 12-year-old and his cousin were taken into custody shortly after.
The duo were brought to the New York Police Department’s 106th precinct on Monday night. They were soon released to their family and taken home without facing any charges. The boy reportedly told the police the joy ride was part of a social media challenge to drive a vehicle until it runs out of gas.
“The kids are OK. They’re OK,” Joe Gangaram, the boy’s uncle told local media. “I thank the precinct for doing a good job. Everybody’s fine.”
