PML-Q rejects Govt's decision to fix wheat support price at Rs1600 per maund

LAHORE (Dunya News) - Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) has rejected the government’s decision to fix the minimum support price of wheat at Rs1600 per maund.

According to details, the Punjab Chief Minister had announced to increase the minimum support price of wheat from Rs1,400 to Rs1,600 per maund as per the decision of ECC.

A statement issued by Speaker Punjab Assembly Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi on the issue said that raising the support price of wheat by only Rs200 is a joke with the farmers.

He demanded the government to fix minimum price of wheat at Rs2,000 per maund.

He said that if the farmer does not get relief, he will be forced to grow other crops instead of wheat, which could lead to a severe wheat crisis in the country.

It may be recalled that the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the Cabinet yesterday increased the support price for the next crop by Rs200 from Rs 1,400 to Rs 1,600 per 40 kg, to increase wheat production in the country.

The decision to increase the price of wheat was taken keeping in view the support price proposed by Punjab. The ECC rejected the proposal of the Ministry of Food Security to increase the support price to Rs1,750 per maund in view of the fear of a massive rise in inflation, and approved an increase in the support price by Rs200 per 40kg instead of Rs350.
