Gilgit-Baltistan polls should be fair, transparent: Chaudhry brothers

LAHORE (Dunya News) – Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) chief Chaudhary Shujaat Hussain and party leader and Speaker Punjab Assembly Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi on Sunday said that the Gilgit-Baltistan elections should be fair and transparent and everyone should have the opportunity to participate freely in these elections.

They said this during their meeting with caretaker Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Minister Mir Afzal Khan in Lahore. Federal Minister for Housing and Works Tariq Bashir Cheema, Senator Kamil Ali Agha, Shafay Hussain and G M Sikander attended the meeting.

Ch Shujaat Hussain and Ch Pervaiz Elahi said that Gilgit-Baltistan is of great importance for Pakistan s economy and defense and is the gateway of China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project.

They said, “Our party has always recognized the importance of this area.”

They said that the sovereignty, defence and economic development of Pakistan which cannot be ignored. “Our party has always given special importance to this region and its people,” they added.

On the occasion, caretaker Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Minister Mir Afzal Khan said that the demand for giving interim provincial status to Gilgit-Baltistan was first put forward by Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, adding that as a result of his efforts, we have achieved this status for which we thank the leadership of the PML-Q, especially Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain.

He said that Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain has played an important role in the development, prosperity and protection of rights of the region.
