Govt forms committee to stop spread of coronavirus misinformation
ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Federal Government on Thursday formed a committee to stop spread of fake news related to novel coronavirus.
The committee will be headed by Interior Minister Brig (retd) Ejaz Shah and will include Dr Faisal Sultan as well as representatives of Interior Ministry, Health Ministry, ISPR, FIA, PTA, PEMRA and NCOC. The committee will play its role in preventing the spread of misinformation in accordance with the strategy.
The first meeting in this regard was held at the Ministry of Interior. On the occasion, the Home Minister said that strict action should be taken against those who spread false and unverified information. He directed the participants of the committee to take all possible steps to stop this act.
Ejaz Shah, while issuing formal instructions to Director Cyber Crime Wing FIA, said that timely monitoring and action should be ensured and immediate action should be taken against those responsible. He said that those who spread such fake news and misinformation are knowingly putting the country and its people in danger.
Talking about the role of media, the Interior Minister said that it has an important role to play in this regard. This type of news should be monitored on electronic media to prevent its spread, for which DG PEMRA should pay special attention to the issue.
The Interior Minister stressed that all institutions and media should play their role in this difficult time. As a nation, we have to fight this pandemic together, he added.
