Heavy rainfall forecasted in Karachi from Aug 9-12

KARACHI (Dunya News) - Civil Aviation Authority has issued an alert today (August 8) in Karachi regarding stormy rains and also made airlines aware of the weather conditions.

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has issued a directive to the Department of Fire and Airside to stay alert to deal with the emergency. The CAA has issued orders to keep the airport and its surroundings clean on priority basis. The captains have also been cautioned at the landing due to the possibility of slipping on the runway.

Meanwhile, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah told media that 150mm of rainfall has been forecasted in Karachi. “I assure that all organizations will be in the field and will minimize the inconvenience for the public”, he added.

Murad Ali Shah claimed that they are well prepared to deal with heavy rains. “The administration will do well this time by learning lessons from the previous rains”, he added. Eid holidays of the staff have been canceled keeping the monsoon spell in mind.

On August 6, Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) forecasted another monsoon spell in Karachi stating that monsoon rain and wind-thunderstorm will hit the city from Friday (August 9) to Monday (August 14) prior to the Eid-ul-Azha.

Chief Meteorological Officer (CMO) Sardar Sarfraz informed that a well-marked monsoon low pressure has formed over North Bay of Bengal and its adjoining areas, likely to move towards Sindh around morning of August 9. Under the influence of this weather system:

Widespread rains/wind-thunderstorm is expected in Mirpurkhas, Thatta, Hyderabad, Karachi, Shaheed Benazirabad divisions from Friday (evening/night) to Monday (morning).

Isolated moderate to heavy falls are also expected in lower Sindh (Mirpurkhas, Thatta, Hyderabad, Karachi, Shaheed Benazirabad divisions), Kalat, Zhob, Naseerabad, Sibbi divisions from Friday (night) to Sunday.

Urban flood warning in Sindh

Heavy falls may generate urban flooding in Karachi, Thatta and Hyderabad divisions on Friday (night) to Sunday, while flash flooding in Kalat, Sibbi, Zhob, Naseerabad divisions during the period.

All concerned authorities are advised to remain alert and take precautionary measures during the forecast period.
