Travel through wormholes is possible, but slow: Research

Travel by wormhole is actually possible, but not without its setbacks, according to physicists.

(Web Desk) – A Harvard physicist has shown that wormholes can exist: tunnels in curved space-time, connecting two distant places, through which travel is possible.

Between the Avengers and Star Wars, pan-galactic travel is painted as an exciting, and almost instantaneous adventure. All you need is a wormhole and you can essentially teleport to your destination light years away. Wormholes are those tunnels carved out in space that connect two very distant places.

Turns out travel by wormhole is actually possible, but not without its setbacks, according to physicists. Unless you’re down for a super long trip, wormholes aren’t going to be your preferred method of transportation between galaxies on your next space trip.

Harvard University physicists Daniel Jafferis and Ping Gao have determined in a study that wormholes can totally exist, but moving through them would be a super slow process.

“It takes longer to get through these wormholes than to go directly, so they are not very useful for space travel,” Jafferis explains in the study. So if wormholes exist, the theory that they may be some sort of shortcut is false.

It may seem exciting to grab your things and travel to the other side of the galaxy, but wormholes aren’t going to make that process any easier.

Sure, Jafferis and Gao have pretty much made up their minds about the unlikelihood of pan-galactic travel. However, considering that wormhole travel is possible, figuring out a way to have light travel through wormholes could answer some questions about quantum gravity on the whole. It’s just not ideal for humans, it seems.
