(Web Desk) – Bugatti, the French sports car brand that is now owned by German automaker Volkswagen, on Tuesday has unveiled the most expensive new car ever built ‘La Voiture Noire’ with a sale price of €16.7 million, or almost $19 million including taxes. It was publicly debuted at the Geneva International Motor Show in Switzerland.
‘La Voiture Noire’ is the result, an extraordinary looking machine that uses the Chiron as its basis, with the familiar – if that’s the word – near-1,500 horsepower, 8.0-litre, quad-turbocharged, 16-cylinder underneath that majestically reworked rear end.
This hyper sports car is the one-off homage to Bugatti’s Type 57 SC Atlantic to celebrate the 110th anniversary of the company.
The original “La Voiture Noire” is shrouded in mystery and lore. In 1930s, only four of those cars were made.
One of those cars became known as "La Voiture Noire" which means – the black car.
Only three are known to survive. The fourth seems to have disappeared shortly before the German invasion of France during World War II. Its whereabouts remain unknown.
The Type 57 SC Atlantic was designed by Jean Bugatti, son of Bugatti founder Ettore Bugatti, at a time when the bodies for most high-end cars were created by separate body makers rather than by the automobile companies themselves.
Jean Bugatti designed some of the most beautiful cars ever seen for his father’s firm.
One of four Type 57 SC Atlantics built between 1936 and 1938, it was owned by Jean Bugatti, the son of designer Ettore. It was also driven regularly by friends of Jean’s, including Le Mans winner Robert Benoist. When Germans seized a Bugatti factory in 1940 during World War II, the car was shipped by train to Bordeaux, but when the train arrived, La Voiture Noire was gone, and it has not been seen since.
A Bugatti Chiron, the brand’s basic model, costs about $3 million. Bugatti’s latest creation, though, sets a new bar in price and exclusivity.
This week at the Geneva Motor Show, Bugatti is also unveiling a special edition of the Chiron: the Chiron Sport “110 ans Bugatti.”
