Cow is sacred animal for the majority Hindu community

NEW DELHI (Dunya News) – Unidentified men allegedly raped a three-month pregnant cow in Andhra Pradesh s East Godavari area on Wednesday, India s News 18 reported.

According to media reports, an Indian farmer’s cow had been missing since Sunday in the district s Pithapuram Mandalam area. After a hunt, the animal was found tied to a nearby tree with bleeding genitals.

A local veterinarian confirmed that the cow was sexually assaulted, following which the farmer lodged a complaint against unidentified people.

As soon as the news spread in the area, local residents thronged the police station and demanded arrest of the accused. The protesters were pacified after police assured them of swift action.

It is pertinent here to mention that cow is sacred animal for the majority Hindu community, and they amble unmolested in traffic-choked streets.

The animal is worshipped and decorated during festivals; holy men take around cows, with their foreheads smeared in vermillion, to seek alms.

More seriously, most states forbid cow slaughter, and the ban on beef has been criticised by many because the meat is cheaper than chicken and fish and is a staple for the poorer Muslim, tribal and dalit (formerly untouchable) communities.

Not surprisingly, the cow is also India s most polarising - and political - animal.
