(Reuters) – In a record year for tasty entries, Swedish amateur baker Jacqueline Broms walked away with the prestigious "People s Prize" on Sunday (December 16) at an annual gingerbread house baking competition in Stockholm.

The 21-year-old told Reuters she agonised over her beautiful baking abode, making a six-sided house complete with marzipan elves and icing railings.

Held at ArkDes, the Swedish Centre for Architecture and Design, Broms held off some stiff competition from a record field of 153 entrants to emerge victorious.

For baking enthusiasts in Sweden, the gingerbread house is a key part of Christmas preparations and this year s theme for the competition, which began in 1990, was "luxury".

Hundreds of curious visitors of all ages inspected the ginger constructions, which ranged from traditional types, such as the winning entry, to modern architectural designs and even a gingerbread cash register.

The exhibition will run in Stockholm until January 6.
