Denying husbands sex is abuse by wives: Malaysian MP

(Web Desk) - An MP from Malaysia has come under intense criticism for stating that denying sex to husbands amounted to abuse by the wives.
According to BBC, the MP, Che Mohamad Zulkifly Jusoh, is from the ruling Barisan Nasional coalition and made these comments while addressing a session of parliament during a debate on domestic violence. The 58-year-old man stated that men suffered emotional rather than physical abuse and though men may be physically stronger than their wives, there were cases where "wives hurt or abuse their husbands in an extreme manner”.
The MP then went on to say that wives caused their husbands "psychological and emotional abuse" by insulting them and refusing their sexual needs.
Che’s remarks drew widespread condemnation and outrage from numerous people including some high profile personalities such as Marina Mahathir (daughter of former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamed) who told AFP news agency that the MP s remarks reflected an old notion that "that when you marry a woman you own her body. It does not work that way."
Mahathir also took the condemnation online when she shared the news on Facebook along with the text comment, "And yet we let men rule countries?”This post caused numerous users to respond with their own comments with most agreeing with her.
This is not the first time an MP’s words have created a problem in Malaysia. In April another politician from the ruling party created a controversy after he stated that it was alright for rape victims to marry their rapists. Malaysia is trying to fix its problems relating to women and the country is presently in talks to amend existing laws against domestic violence.
