She wore her grandmother's white cotton sari to defy the stereotypical image of a bride

(Web Desk) – A Bangladeshi bride named Tasnim Jara wore no makeup or jewelry at her wedding reception, during the past week, to make a statement against societal norms and defy the stereotypical image of a bride.

She took to Facebook and shared her experience saying, “I walked into my wedding reception wearing grandmother’s white cotton saree with zero makeup and no jewellery … I feel that we need to change this mindset … People may call it simple, but it was very special to me, for what I believe in and what it means to me.”

Tasnim rejected the view of her aunts and friends that claim brides are ‘incomplete’ without ornaments, highlighting the irony that girls have to buy expensive dresses for their weddings which are of no use later on. While arguing about the societal norms about a bride, she said girls are pressurised to end up looking nothing like themselves, dismissing the idea of taking services from the best makeup artist in town and pay large some of money to get dressed for the occasion.

“Society constantly reminds her that her actual skin colour isn’t good enough for her own wedding,” she mentioned.

However, she encouraged girls who wish to dress up, wear makeup and jewelry on their wedding. “I am all in for that if a girl wants to use make-up, jewelry and expensive clothes,” she wrote. Tasnim specially thanked her husband Khaled Saifullah who kept on supporting her when she faced resistance after making the call.
