Putin pays a surprise visit to athletes' village where he chatted up members of the ice hockey team.

SOCHI (AFP) - Amanda Kessel, Meghan Duggan, Brianna Decker, Megan Bozek and Kelli Stack were relaxing and drinking coffee in the common area of the village when Putin approached them.

"He asked us what country we were from and what sport we played and we told him we were hockey players. He seemed to really like the fact we played hockey," said Bozek after the US practice at the Shayba Arena.

Bozek said Putin was travelling with an entourage of about 50 people and security was tight.

American forward Kessel said sports-loving Putin was in a good mood and familiar with women s hockey.

"He was very friendly. He seemed like he was a fan," said Kessel, adding some of players were wearing their US Olympic gear.
