One Pakistani killed, four others injured in Lebanon blast

BEIRUT (Dunya News) – Yesterday’s bomb blast in the Lebanese capital Beirut has killed 113 people so far. Among the dead is a Pakistani man while four others were injured.

The Pakistani ambassador to Lebanon said that the father and sister of the deceased man were also injured in the blast and are currently undergoing treatment in the ICU.

The young man’s mother and grandmother were also injured, he said. The unfortunate family lived near the port of Beirut and the Pakistani embassy is trying its best to provide all possible assistance to them.

The Lebanese health minister said the death toll from the blast had risen to 113, with dozens still missing. About 4,000 people were also injured in the blast.

The governor of Beirut said the blast had displaced some 300,000 people and caused between three to five billion dollars in damage. The French President has announced a visit to Beirut along with aid workers and supplies.

According to Arab media, the French president will visit Lebanon on Thursday. On the other hand, Australia has also announced 1.4 million dollars in aid to Lebanon.

The European Union has also announced plans to send more than 100 firefighters and sniffer dogs to Lebanon. There are reports that wheat stocks have been destroyed as a result of the blast leaving Lebanon with less than a month’s supply of the essential commodity.

The blast reportedly resulted in an earthquake of 3.5 magnitude, destroying three Beirut hospitals and damaging two others. It is believed that senior Lebanese officials were aware of the presence of ammonium nitrate at the port for six years.

Arab media says customs officials had written to the court six times seeking a ruling on the dangerous chemical substance, but the court failed to respond to their letters.
