PM forms high-powered committee to investigate sugar crisis

Decision to take action against profiteers taken during meeting.

Islamabad (Dunya News) – Prime Minister Imran Khan formed an inquiry committee on Friday to investigate all of sudden price hike of sugar in country. The committee consists of Director Generals of Federal Investigation Agency and Anti-Corruption Punjab and an officer of grade 21 or 22 from the Intelligence Bureau (IB).

The decision was taken during a meeting presided over by PM to curtail smuggling of edible and other items’ smuggling.

Ministry of Interior, Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), and federal and provincial law enforcement agencies have been directed to launch a joint operation to control sugar prices.

On the other side, the interior ministry has been ordered to submit an implementation report in next 48 hours. PM has ordered Intelligence Bureau, Inter Service Intelligence (ISI) and FIA to present the report of the crackdown on regular basis.

PM stating the prevailing situation said smuggling has caused surge in sugar prices.

The prime minister also urged the authorities to adopt latest technologies in the crackdown, besides directing them to design a comprehensive policy about Iranian oil. He also ordered the authorities for pacing up the speed on the establishment of border markets in Balochistan.
