PTI's Mehmood Khan becomes KP CM

PTI's Mehmood Khan was declared victorious with 77 votes.

PESHAWAR (Dunya News) – Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Mehmood Khan has been elected as new Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) for next five year today (Thursday). 

During the session under the supervision of newly-elected Speaker Mushtaq Ghani, members of provincial assembly cast the votes for their favorite candidate.

After the counting, PTI’s Mehmood Khan was declared victorious with 77 votes while opposition’s candidate Mian Nisar Gul faced defeat with 33 votes.

Member National Assembly (MNA), Nasir Khan Musazai while congratulating CM KP Mehmood Khan over his election told APP that it was a big step towards smooth transition of power in the province and will strengthen democracy in the country.

“Mehmood Khan is the best available choice for office of Chief Minister as he carried vast political and administrative experience after he served as Provincial Minister for Sports, Tourism and Irrigation during last tenure of PTI Government,” he said.

“Mehmood Khan has defeated candidate of joint opposition Mian Nisar Gul with a big margin of 44 votes and became the 22nd elected Chief Minister of KP, reflecting PTI’s overwhelming majority in KP,” he told.


Profile of Mehmood Khan


Mehmood Khan was born in Matta Tehsil of Swat in 1972. He got early education from Government Primary School and then obtained certificate of Matriculation from Peshawar Public School.

He did his masters from Agriculture University of Peshawar.

From 2007 to 2012, he had been Nazim Union Council Khariri of Tehsil Matta. He is a prominent politician from Swat who elected as MPA on PK-9 in 2013.

He held portfolios of sports, culture, and irrigation in the cabinet of Pervez Khattak.

He has also been KP irrigation and home minister but for a very brief period of time. In general election 2018, he bagged 25,697 votes from PK-9. He is the President of PTI Malakand Division.

Earlier, KP Assembly had selected PTI’s Mushtaq Ghani as speaker after he received 81 votes and declared victorious against opposition’s Laiq Mohammad who secured 27 votes.

108 out of 112 members of provincial assembly exercised their voting right.

However, PTI leader Mahmood Jan was made deputy speaker with 78 votes whereas opposition’s Jamshed Mohammad only obtained 30 votes.
