Echoes of another 'Charter of Democracy' after Bilawal's statement
PPP chairman said that a dialogue between all parliamentary parties was necessary.
ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – As the 2018 general elections are just around the corner, another Charter of Democracy (CoD) has become the hottest topic in the current scenario.
Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari while addressing a press conference in Islamabad had hinted at another Charter of Democracy (CoD).
He said that he believe we need a broader consensus on the principles in the charter of democracy, not only with PML-N but with all the political parties that would form the government.
The PPP chairman had further said that a dialogue between all parliamentary parties was necessary for the best interest of the country, adding that this isn’t an issue of PPP or PML-N but all political parties.
“Our experience with former premier and PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif and former Punjab CM and PML-N president Shahbaz Sharif on the implementation of the charter of democracy was not positive,” Bilawal added.
Later, responding to the PPP chairman’s willingness, PML-N spokeswoman Marriyum Aurangzeb welcomed Bilawal Bhutto’s suggestion saying her party was ready for dialogue for the stability of democracy.
“Our aim is to ensure free, fair and transparent elections,” she said and added they do not want anyone to raise question on the transparency of the election.
It is pertinent here to mention that in May 2006, the CoD was signed by former prime ministers Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif.
The charter commits the two parties to struggle against dictatorship and on coming to power do away with the ‘distortions’ made in the Constitution after the overthrow of the PML-N government.
Disbandment of the National Security Council had also been promised by the charter.
