NANKANA SAHIB (Dunya News) – Former Punjab chief minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday called on his supporters to reach Lahore to accord a historic welcome to PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif.

Nawaz was convicted by a corruption court and sentenced to 10 years in prison for corrupt practices linked to his family’s purchase of upscale London flat.

Nawaz’s daughter, Maryam, widely seen as his chosen political heir, was sentenced to seven years in prison and is disqualified from contesting the elections. Maryam’s husband and PML-N lawmaker Muhammad Safdar was handed a year in jail. He was arrested on Sunday.

“The one who transformed Pakistan into a nuclear power is arriving on July 13. We must be there to welcome him,” Shehbaz told a rally of supporters at Nankana Sahib.

“PML-N supporters from all parts of the country will be there to welcome their favourite and most popular leader.”

The former Punjab chief minister also criticised the court ruling that sent his brother and former prime minister to jail.

“There should be across-the-board accountability. Those who have looted billions of the country are giving speeches. Those who have served the public, however, are being dragged into the courts by NAB.”
