The anti-graft watchdog says Captain Safdar will be arrested on Monday.

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has decided to arrest former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and his daughter immediately upon their return from London.

According to sources, the anti-graft watchdog has obtained a copy of the Avenfield verdict and decided to proceed with the arrest of the PML-N supremo, his daughter and son-in-law Captain (retired) Safdar.

Both Nawaz and his daughter are in London with Nawaz’s wife, Kulsoom, who is being treated there for cancer and is in a coma after suffering a heart attack last month.

The father-daughter duo would be taken into custody upon their arrival at the airport whereas Captain Safdar will be arrested on July 9 (Monday), said NAB sources.

Nawaz, who was serving his third term as prime minister before the Supreme Court ousted him over corrpution charges in July last year, was sentenced in absentia on Friday to 10 years in prison by a corruption court in Islamabad.

His daughter, Maryam, widely seen as his chosen political heir, was sentenced to seven years in prison. Maryam’s husband and PML-N lawmaker Muhammad Safdar was sentenced to one year in prison, prosecution lawyer Sardar Muzaffar Abbasi said.

Abbasi added that NAB court ordered Sharif to pay a fine of 8 million pounds ($10.6 million) and Maryam was fined 2 million pounds, while ordering the confiscation of the London properties on behalf of the Pakistani government.
