The caretaker government will only assist ECP in holding general elections

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – With the passage of Election Act 2018, the caretaker government will have limited authority.
The federal and provincial governments could only run day to day affairs.

The caretaker government will only assist Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) in holding general elections, while steps that would be taken by the government could be reversed.

The caretaker government cannot take such decisions which could affect the next government.

Neither the caretaker government could sign international agreements nor it would have power to to make appointments or transfers.

Earlier, former Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice (r) Nasirul Mulk was named caretaker prime minister.

The announcement ends weeks of wrangling between Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi s ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Leader of Opposition in National Assembly Syed Khursheed Shah s Pakistan People s Party (PPP).

Mulk, who also served as the interim chief of the Election Commission of Pakistan, will head a technocratic government until elections as the current government and parliament will be dissolved on Thursday.

The interim administration usually does not make any major decisions until the new government is elected, though it may be forced to act to shore up the economy amid a worsening macro-economic outlook.
