PPP, PTI workers clash over May 12 public meeting venue

Hakeem Saeed Ground turned into a battle field as PPP and PTI workers pelted stones at each other.

KARACHI (Dunya News) – Workers of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf clashed with each other at the Hakeem Saeed Ground in Karachi’s Gulshan-e-Iqbal area, the venue for May 12 public meetings announced by both parties.

Hakeem Saeed Ground turned into a battle field as PPP and PTI workers pelted stones at each other and also resorted to attack with sticks and iron rods. Angry PPP activists also set ablaze PTI camp at the venue.

Several vehicles and motorcycles were damaged as protesters pelted stones. Two vehicles and dozens of motorcycles were also torched. Scores of people were also injured. Protesters also resorted to aerial firing.

The angry mob also attacked Dunya News DSNG which was present there for the coverage and broke its windscreen by pelting stones. Dunya News DSNG engineer also received injuries in the attack.

All shops and trade centres in the area were also shut down as situation remained tense for several hours after the clash. It is pertinent to mention here that police remained a silent spectator on the occasion.

University Road near the venue of public meeting remained closed for all kind of traffic for more than three hours. A heavy contingent of Rangers reached the spot and brought the situation under control.

On the other hand, PTI leader Ali Zaidi reached Aziz Bhatti Police Station to register a case against PPP leaders and workers. He also asked CM Pervez Khattak not to allow PPP to hold public meeting in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Sinsh Syed Murad Ali Shah has taken notice of the incident after which the PPP camp at the Hakeem Saeed Ground was removed.
