The attack took place days after Pakistan launched a campaign against polio across the country.

QUETTA (Dunya News) – A mother and her daughter who were taking part in an anti-polio campaign in the southwestern city of Quetta were shot dead by the motorcycle riding gunmen on Zarghoon Road today (Thursday).

According to police, the victims have been identified as Sakina Bibi and Rizwana.

The attack took place when hundreds of polio teams were vaccinating children to save them from the crippling disease. Polio campaign has been stopped in Shalkot area, while the vaccination drive is underway in other parts of the city.

Acting DIG Aitzaz Goraya informed media that evidence has been collected from the crime scene. He assured that culprits will be arrested soon.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility of the attack.

Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria are the only three countries in the world where polio hasn’t been eliminated.

Pakistan regularly launches anti-polio drives despite threats from the Taliban, who perceive the campaign as part of a Western conspiracy and claim it will sterilize Pakistani children.
