Dr Ruth Pfau laid to rest in Karachi after state funeral
The 88-years-old German-Pakistani nun died on August 10.
KARACHI (Dunya News) - Dr Ruth Katherina Martha Pfau, who spent over 50 years of her life to fighting leprosy in Pakistan, has been laid to rest at Gora Graveyard in Karachi today (Saturday).
According to details, state funeral with full honor was given to the late Pakistan’s ‘Mother Teresa’ at Saint Patrick’s Cathedral with 17-gun salute while her body was wrapped in national flag.
President Mamnoon Hussain, Governor Sindh Muhammad Zubair, Chief Minister Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah, Army Chief Qamar Javed Bajwa, representatives of three armed forces and a number of foreign dignitaries participated in the funeral.
The 88-years-old German-Pakistani nun died on August 10 when she was admitted to Marie Adelaide Leprosy Centre due to breathing difficulties.
In 1960, Dr Ruth decided to dedicate the rest of her life to the people of Pakistan and their battle against Leprosy. Patients from all over Pakistan and even Afghanistan came for their treatment in Karachi’s leprosy center. In recognition of her services to the country, she was awarded Pakistani citizenship in 1988.
She also received Hilal-i-Pakistan award for her work with leprosy patients in 1989.
