LAHORE (Dunya News) – Nomination of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Shahid Khaqan Abbasi for interim prime minister has been challenged in Supreme Court (SC) Lahore registry.

A plea was filed by local Syed Mahmood Akhtar Naqvi in which it was stated that Shahid Khaqan is an owner of AirBlue company and a businessman. He said that cases are already present against him in National Accountability Bureau (NAB) and Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).

He said the man named in various cases cannot be nominated for premiership as it is illegal, therefore, his nomination should be annulled.

On the other hand, Shahid Khaqan said that opponents were free to file references against him.

He said he had been in politics for the last 30 years and had declared all his assets. The opponents could file multiple references, but they should avoid mudslinging on baseless grounds, he added.

Replying to a question, Abbasi said he would form the cabinet in consultation with the PML-N leadership. Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, he added, was an important leader, who had great respect in the party.

Pakistan’s parliament will meet on Tuesday to elect an interim prime minister.

The ruling party named Sharif s younger brother Shahbaz as his successor over the weekend, but he must first enter parliament by contesting the seat left vacant by Sharif.

The top court ousted Sharif Friday after an investigation into corruption allegations against him and his family, bringing his historic third term in power to an unceremonious end and briefly plunging the nuclear-armed nation into political instability.

Nawaz Sharif was the 15th prime minister in Pakistan’s 70-year history -- roughly half of which was under military rule -- to be ousted before completing a full term.
