He had previously took charge of additional inspector general (AIG) when Mushtaq Sukhera retired

LAHORE (Dunya News) – Captain (retd) Arif Nawaz has been appointed as the Punjab IG, according to a notification released by the Cabinet Secretariat, Government of Pakistan.

The notification reads, "Capt (retd) Arif Nawaz Khan, a BS-21 officer of Police Service of Pakistan, presently serving under Government of the Punjab, is transferred and posted as Provincial Police Officer (PPP) (another title for IGP Punjab), Government of the Punjab, in his own pay and scale, with immediate effect and until further orders."

He was previously positioned as additional inspector general (AIG) when Mushtaq Sukhera retired in April. Punjab Police had remained handicapped with transitional IGs during the period. Lahore High Court (LHC) had heard a petition of a local, in this regard, and ordered the provincial government to appoint an IG. As a result, officer who was to retire in two months was positioned.

LHC had dismissed the appointment and told PML-N government to take the matter seriously, but the reaction was prolonged silence. Rumours had started to circulate claiming Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif was too busy to spare time and interview officers for the vacant IG position.

The recent Lahore blast near Arfa Karim Software Park at Ferozepur Road, which killed at least 26 individuals and injured over 56 people, got Punjab government severe criticism. A day after the suicide attack, a notification was issused today regarding the fresh appointment.

Arif Nawaz has also served as district police officer (DPO) of Bahawalpur and Rajanpur in past.
