SC indicates to conclude hearing of Panama leaks case till Thursday
A five-member SC bench heard the Panama Papers case today.
ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - As the Panama leaks case entered final phase, the Supreme Court of Pakistan on Tuesday expressed dissatisfaction over the role of National Accountability Bureau (NAB) and the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) in probing Panama Papers scandal.
A five-member larger bench of the Supreme Court headed by Justice Asif Saeed Khosa resumed hearing of Panama Papers case.
The apex court remarked that absence of action on behalf of accountability watchdogs indicates paralysis of institutions.
When inquired about steps taken in Panama leaks case, FBR chairman Dr Muhammad Irshad stated before the bench that FBR had sent notices to 343 people framed in Panama leaks case on September 2, 2016.
"Hassan, Hussain and Maryam responded to the notices. Maryam Nawaz denied ownership of offshore companies," stated Dr Irshad.
Being angry on FBR’s negligence and delay in Panama leaks case, Justice Azmat said it took FBR six months to approach the Ministry of Foreign Affairs over Panama Papers issue.
While directing the Attorney General to complete his arguments till Wednesday, Justice Asif Saeed Khosa indicated that hearing of Panama papers case will be concluded in a day or two.
During hearing, AG said that apex court does not have jurisdiction to announce verdict in cases like Panama leaks upon which the bench remarked that jurisdiction of the court is not limited.
The bench has adjourned hearing of the case till Wednesday.
