PM inaugurates K-2 nuclear power project in Karachi

Eliminating energy crisis and terrorism are the foremost priorities of the government, the PM said.

KARACHI (Web Desk) - Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Thursday inaugurated the K-2 power project at the Karachi Nuclear Power Plant (Kanupp) in Karachi. The power plant will generate 1,100MW electricity upon completion.

Addressing the ceremony, the Prime Minister said that eliminating energy crisis and terrorism are the foremost priorities of the government.

He appreciated the steps being taken by Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission for the safety of existing and under construction nuclear power plants.

He said the electricity supply situation has improved a lot as a result of steps taken by the government.

While commending the Chinese assistance in the nuclear power sector, Nawaz Sharif said cooperation in the establishment of K-2 and K-3 nuclear power projects reflect strong bonds between Pakistan and China.

“Currently two nuclear power plants at Chashma are providing 600 MW of cheap electricity to the country and Chashma III and IV are also being established with the Chinese cooperation which will start producing 630 MW of electricity by next yearm” he added.

Giving his remarks on recent terrorist attacks on Punjab Home Minister Shuja Khanzada and MQM MNA Rashid Godil, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said the terrorists are resorting to cowardly acts in reaction to ongoing operation Zarb-e-Azb in the North Waziristan tribal region.

He said such acts cannot deter nation’s resolve in war on terror and the authorities concerned will continue their battle till restoration of complete law and order situation in the country.
