At least 46 areas in Sindh declared sensitive to floods

Another seven villages have been flooded after water level at Guddu Barrage rose

SUKKUR (Dunya News) – The authorities on Thursday have declared as many as 46 points in Sindh sensitive to floods.

Destruction by floods in River Sindh continues as another levee was breached in Rajanpur while moderate level flood at Chashma Barrage led authorities to open all 52 spillways.

Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Shahbaz Sharif cut short his foreign tour to visit flood-hit areas. The CM paid a visit to Jakhar Imam Shah and expressed resentment over authorities  slackness. CM Shahbaz also visited Kot Mithan.

Information and Irrigation Minister Nisar Khuhro held a press conference and said that at least six lacs cusecs water is likely to pass through Guddu by Wednesday.

However, the floods have caused immense damages. Crops grown on lacs of acres of land in Layyah, Dera Ghazi Khan, Muzaffargarh and southern Punjab have been destroyed. Thousands of families have lost their sources of income and homes as hundreds of villages have been washed away so far.

However, Pakistan Army is continuing relief operations in flood-hit areas.

In Layyah, at least 380 localities have been demolished leaving 56,000 families homeless. Sugarcane and cotton crops spread across at least 2 lac acres have been quashed.

Separately, a levee in Dera Ghazi Khan’s Kot Chattha was breached leaving several villages flooded. Numerous villages have been reportedly inundated in Jhagra Mam Shah.

Floods have engulfed more villages in Muzaffargarh, Rajanpur, Kot Adu and Alipur. Until the filing of this report, at least seven people have lost their lives including three women. Three villages have also been reported inundated in Sadiqabad.

Another seven villages have been flooded after water level at Guddu Barrage rose. Land connections of as many as ten villages in Ghotki to other areas have been lost resultantly, locals are stranded and awaiting rescue teams. While at least 60 other villages in Kacha area of Ghotki are flooded.

River Chenab flood has created havoc in Shujaabad as several villages have been affected. On the other hand, as many as two motorcyclists have lost their lives in Balochistan after Hub Canal was flooded.

However, army soldiers, with help of life jackets and boats, have shifted thousands of people to safer places. Moreover, relief and rescue operations are ongoing in Muzaffargarh, Rajanpur, Dera Ghazi Khan and other areas.
