Death toll rises to 1097 in Karachi heat wave

KARACHI (Dunya News) – Death toll in Sindh metropolitan on Saturday has reached to at least 1097 as another 23 people have died in the heat wave.

According to details, as many as 13 more in Jinnah hospital, five in Civil Hospital and another five in Abbasi Shaheed Hospital have lost the battle against deadly heat.

At least 351 patients have died in Jinnah hospital until filing of this report from June 20. While the number in Civil Hospital stands at 142.

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari summoned a high-level meeting to discuss situation emerging after intense heat wave in Sindh, Dunya News reported.

Bilawal made an emergency return to Karachi from Dubai last night. Meanwhile, the key PPP leadership including Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari and Faryal Talpur are still in Dubai.

The death toll from a severe heatwave in Karachi has climbed past 1,000, even as cooler conditions brought some relief to the region.

Despite the drop in temperature, the death toll continued to rise, with Pakistan s National Disaster Management Authority saying that army and ranger units had been deployed to help those suffering through the crisis.

Victims of the heat wave have died of heat stroke, dehydration or other heat-related illnesses - with the elderly and poor the worst-affected groups.

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has directed the authorities to bury unclaimed bodies within 72 hours.

Talking to media outside the Bilawal House, senior PPP leader Rehman Malik said ‘going a foreign trip does not mean the person has escaped from the country.’

To a question regarding replacement of CM Sindh Qaim Ali Shah, Malik said Shah was elected by the masses, thus, he is not being replaced.

He said the federal government is responsible for electricity generation and it is answerable for load shedding.
