Interim committee approves Local Bodies Amendment Ordinance for Punjab

The interim committee has forwarded its recommendations to Punjab Assembly

LAHORE (Dunya News) – Punjab Assembly’s interim committee for local bodies on Wednesday approved Local Bodies Amendment Ordinance 2014, Dunya News reported.

As per the ordinance, the Election Commission has been authorized to perform delimitations. Only government members participated in the committee meeting.

The interim committee’s meeting took place in Lahore and comprised six members of the government.

No member from Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), Pakistan Muslim League Quaid (PML-Q) and Jamaat Islami participated in the meeting. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) members were also absent because of the resignations earlier presented to the House.

The committee approved the ordinance in absence of the opposition members. As per the ordinance, the Election Commission has been authorized to perform delimitations.

The renewal of the electoral lists will also be the responsibility of the Election Commission.

The Election Commission will also formulate the delimitations of wards and union councils for general seats of the Municipal committees.

The interim committee has forwarded its recommendations to Punjab Assembly. The bill is expected to be passed by the Punjab Assembly on Friday or Monday.
