Syed Waris Shah's urs begins in Sheikhupura

SHEIKHUPURA (Dunya News) – The annual Urs of eminent sufi poet Syed Waris Shah will start today in Jandiala Sher Khan, village of Sheikhupura.

Adept at Punjabi prose and literature, Syed Waris Shah was known to be the Shakespeare of Punjabi. His folk tale ‘Heer Kahaani’ is still the most read book in the rural areas of Punjab.

His devotees flutter in from within the country and abroad, to attend the festivity. They pray, illuminate lanterns, rejoice and conduct competitions of reciting his work. This is how they pay tribute to him and reminisce his work.

His famous folk tale ‘Heer Ranjha’ is said to be the encyclopedia of Punjab.
