Model Town incident: Gullu Butt likely to be released on bail

Police told court no pistol was recovered from Gullu Butt's possession during investigation process.

LAHORE (Web Desk) – Gullu Butt, the accused seen damaging vehicles in Lahore’s Model Town area during PAT worker’s clash with police last month, has been sent on 14-day judicial remand, Dunya News reported.

Anti-terrorism court (ATC) judge Rai Yaqub heard the case today (Saturday).

The police told court that investigation process has been completed and there is no need to extend Gullu Butt’s physical remand. Authorities stated that no pistol was recovered from Butt’s possession.

After hearing the arguments, the court sent Gullu Butt on 14-day judicial remand, following which he submitted a bail applicaton which will be heard later today.

TV cameras had captured Gullu Butt smashing a number of vehicles in the presence of police during clash of Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) workers and police outside the Minhajul Quran International Secretariat in Model Town area of Lahore on June 17.

During case proceeding today, another four accused including inspector Sheikh Amir Saleem, sub-inspection Azhar, constable Khurram and Naveed were also produced before the court.

The court extended physical remand of the accused till July 26.

Earlier today, the court extended interim bail of former superintendent of police (SP) security Salman Ghani, who ordered police to open fire on PAT protestors, and constable Abid till July 26 and directed the police to present final investigation report in the next hearing.

The court also accepted Minhajul Quran administration’s plea to adjourn case hearing till July 21 and directed Minhajul Quran lawyers to present arguments over the report of joint investigation team.

On June 17, more than ten people were killed and 90 injured when riot police armed with assault rifles clashed with Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) chief Tahirul Qadri’s supporters in Model Town area of Lahore.

The clashes erupted when authorities came to Qadri s house and seminary complex to remove security barriers that they said had turned the entire vicinity into a no-go area.
