Government should review this Bill and act according to constitution, Raza Rabbani said.

ISLAMABAD (Web Desk) - Minister of Science and Technology Zahid Hamid on behalf of Interior Minister tabled ‘Protection of Pakistan Bill 2014’ in the Senate today (Friday).

Deputy chairman Sabir Baloch chaired today Senate session.

On the occasion, Zahid Hamid said considerable changes were made in the bill and as far as clauses related to detentions are concerned, they have been taken from already existing law of Anti-Terrorism Act 1997.

He said clauses related to location of the detainees are extracted from Article 10 of the constitution.

Meanwhile, opposition strongly protested against the bill and chanted slogans of ‘black law’ against it.

PPP’s parliamentary leader Raza Rabbani, while speaking on behalf of Opposition Leader, suggested the government should reconsider this bill in the backdrop of 27 human rights conventions, which we are bound to follow because of European Union’s GSP Plus status.

He said the bill may contradict these human rights conventions in the future.

Senator Haji Adeel said a new bill for civilians’ protection will be tabled if this bill gets passed.

“We reject this bill. A special committee should be established to review this it,” he added.

Later, the Bill was referred to the concerned standing committee.
