ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - The Foreign Office spokesman on Friday said Pakistan has appreciated president Obama s acknowledgement that force alone cannot make us safer and it has been Islamabad s longstanding stance that a comprehensive strategy was required to address the root causes that foster terrorism and extremism.

While taking note of the counterterrorism strategy outlined by president Obama in his speech on Thursday, The spokesman said Pakistan appreciates President Obama s recognition of the sacrifices made by Pakistan in the fight against terrorism.

He said as a frontline state in the fight against terrorism‚ Pakistani troops have borne the main brunt and offered sacrifices.

The spokesman said Islamabad welcomes the resolve expressed by President Obama to continue efforts to rebuild the important bilateral relationship with Pakistan‚ which should be based on the mutual respect and beneficial to each other.

On the use of drone strikes‚ the spokesman said the Government of Pakistan has consistently maintained that the drone strikes are counter-productive.

Such strikes entail loss of innocent civilian lives and have human rights and humanitarian implications. They violate the principles of national sovereignty‚ territorial integrity and international law, the spokesman said.
