Kabir Khan's Phantom trailer: fiction or vile Bollywood fantasy?

Dunya News

The trailer can be best described as aggressive and provocative

(Web Desk) – The official trailer of Phantom featuring Saif Ali Khan by Bollywood director Kabir Khan who is known for his obsession with Pakistan hit the internet on Saturday.

The 2 minute 41 second trailer will make one question whether this resemblance to the real life characters is a work of fiction, a vile Bollywood fantasy or just entertainment inspired by wishful thinking as admitted at the end of the trailer.

One can always argue it’s just a damn film even films come into question when they are provocative and aggressive.

So here’s what’s happening: The trailer builds upon the real visuals from the tragic Mumbai attack – leave it to Bollywood to cash even on that – and then features Hafiz Saeed’s voice.

It then features an officer complaining how India never does anything in respond to actions of “these people” – a claim that is not just over reaching but India’s interference in Pakistan and its atrocities in Kashmir are widely and seriously questioned internationally.

The officials then work out a plan for which they search for someone insane…and of course, who better than Saif Ali Khan?

The trailer then shows a list of antagonists with staunch resemblance of real life individuals with a slight change in names including Hariz Saeed, Sajid Meed and Sabahuddin Umvi.

Then comes protagonist Saif Ali Khan’s love affair Katrina telling how most wanted terrorists will never face trial and making extrajudicial assassination justified.

There’s also a claim that they’re not attacking the people of Pakistan but only want to eliminate “terrorists”. Of course, Indian officers are always “all Kosher”.

The trailer shows a lot of rhetoric by Saif Ali Khan, especially the question how America violated international borders to kill Osama Bin Laden then why can’t Indians do the same? This is followed by his aggressive dialogue “we’ll kill them by invading their house”.

The storyline as hinted in the trailer completely ignores diplomatic principles, international laws, due legal and judicial process and openly glorifies breaching international border for the sole purpose of assassinating individuals perceived as terrorists, the individuals who are not convicted by any court.

Pakistani fans of Bollywood that are hurt by the storyline can relax as this film is nothing more than wishful thinking as even claimed at the end of the trailer: “A story you wished were true”…whatever that means.

Even Indians agree with you.
