The price of tomatoes currently stands above Rs. 200/kg in Lahore, Faisalabad and most of Punjab

KARACHI/QUETTA (Dunya News) – There has been an ongoing hike in the prices of vegetables in the country, especially tomatoes which are currently priced at Rs. 220/kg in Karachi. The price of peas has also escalated to Rs. 240/kg in Quetta.

The situation is no good in Punjab districts as well. The price of tomatoes has gone over Rs 200/kg in cities including Lahore and Faisalabad. Residents of Quetta have been consistently buying tomatoes at Rs 150/kg.

Sources within the vegetable market have reasoned that the tomatoe crop is out of season and all of it has been brought from Afghanistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP). The officials of federal government have hoped that the price will decrease in coming days.

Other vegetables including peas, cabbage and okra are also being sold at higher than usual prices. Quetta vendors told that tomato produced in Balochistan was exported to other cities which is why the prices hiked in the provincial capital.
