Punjab govt to set up laptop plant: minister

Says the measure would help facilitate the distribution of laptop to the brilliant students.

 

LAHORE (Online) - Punjab government has decided to establish a high quality laptop manufacturing plant at Sundar Industrial Estate in collaboration with highly reputed international computer hardware companies.

 

This was revealed by the Punjab Minister for Education Rana Mashhood Ahmed Khan while presiding over a briefing session in Higher Education Department here Thursday.

 

The measure would help facilitate the distribution of laptop to the brilliant students in the province of Punjab at a larger scale.

 

The Minister said there is an indigenous demand of 80 thousand laptops per annum in the province for free of cost distribution among the intelligent students of various private and public sector universities in the province while there is an ample demand from the federally administered universities also.

 

“We will establish our own brand of laptop which will be a pride for our younger generation. We will not compromise on technical quality of Pakistan assembled laptop although the Punjab government will offer a chunk of land on concession rate to the well reputed companies for installation of the proposed assembling plant”, he added.

 

The minister said that this step will prove a milestone in the process of transfer of the latest technology to Pakistan and we will be able to export laptops of our brand to Africa, Middle East and Central Asia with the passage of time, he added.

 

The meeting was informed that one lakh laptops were procured from DELL this year out of which 92 thousand laptops were distributed on merit to the students while 8 thousand laptops are present in the stock. 72 thousand laptops are to be procured for provision to the next session of fresh graduates in January 2014.

 

The Education Minister constituted a special committee for procurement and distribution of laptops for the current year.
