UN group on missing persons to visit Pakistan

After visit, the group will submit its report to the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva.

The United Nations Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances will visit Pakistan on September 10, according to UN spokesperson.During it’s visit to Pakistan, the group will visit Islamabad and other cities and hold talks with federal and provincial officials as well as with different groups and individuals.Since its creation in 1980, the working group has dealt with more than 50,000 cases in 80 countries. By opening channels of communication between the families and governments concerned, it seeks to ensure that individual cases are investigated and to clarify the whereabouts of persons who have disappeared.Its members are independent and report to the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva.The group continues to address cases of disappearances until they are resolved. Its five expert members serve in their individual capacities, and not as representatives of their governments.The Working Group currently comprises Chair-Rapporteur Olivier de Frouville (France); Ariel Dulitzky (Argentina); Jasminka Dzumhur (Bosnia and Herzegovina); Osman El-Hajje (Lebanon), and Jeremy Sarkin (South Africa).
