Protests snowballed to Indian cities after Saba Dewan, a filmmaker's call for a demonstration

(Web Desk) – India and cities internationally have protested mob lynching of a 16-year-old on a Haryana train on June 23, following a call for protest by a documentary filmmaker, Saba Dewan in Delhi under the name ‘Not in my name’.

Junaid Khan was enroute Mathura with his two brothers when an altercation over seats led to communal slurs and claimed teen’s life.

Dewan wrote on Facebook:

Starting from New Delhi, the protest snowballed and reached cities across India including Kolkata, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Pune and Mumbai among other cities. Internationally, people protested in Karachi, Toronto, London and Boston.

Mob lynching and communal hate attacks have escalated in India against Muslims and Dalits. Since 2016, rows over beef ban have claimed several lives of minority Muslims.
