Sighting of humpback whales off the coast of Karachi is a rare phenomenon.

KARACHI (Web Desk) – Fishermen saw something that is rarely seen off the Karachi coast, a pod of humpback whales.
Around six humpback whales were reportedly spotted off the coast of Karachi between 12th and 17th September.

According to the World Wide Fund for Nature-Pakistan (WWF-P), a humpback whale was first spotted on Sept 12 and the second time on the same day, a group of four whales of the same species was spotted some14km south of Karachi. The last sighting occurred on September 17.

Following an extensive review process that started in 2009 and was finalized in September 2016, the United States National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reported that five populations of humpback whales have shown very little signs of increase toward recovery, and are still listed as Endangered or Threatened.

Of these, the Arabian Sea population is the smallest, most distinct, and most at risk. Its range is believed to extend from the coasts of Yemen and Oman in the west to Iran, Pakistan and India in the east.
