Japan's Haruka Tachimoto wins gold in 70kg Judo

RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug 10, 2016 (AFP) - Japan s Haruka Tachimoto won a surprise gold medal in the women s Olympic judo under-70kg division in Rio on Wednesday.
The 26-year-old world number 14, who had never before won a major individual medal, beat three-time world champion Yuri Alvear of Colombia in the final after countering a hip throw attempt and then pinning her opponent for the maximum ippon score.
Britain s Sally Conway and Laura Vargas Koch of Germany claimed the bronze medals.
