ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – The federal government on Monday has approached Supreme Court of Pakistan (SC) for appointment of new Islamabad Inspector General of Police (IG) after the fiasco surrounding controversial transfer of Jan Mohammad and consequent reinstatement by the apex court.

As per details garnered, Attorney General (AG) Anwar Maqsood filed a petition in this regard in country’s top court whereas a three-member bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Saqib Nisar began hearing of the case.

As the hearing went underway, CJP inquired to whom charge is handed over when the incumbent IG goes on a foreign visit. To this, AG replied that Additional IG is given powers of IG. He also told the bench that situation of federal capital is tense.

“You [AG] desire permission from us [SC] for appointment of new Islamabad IG. Awards powers of IG to any senior official until he returns”, remarked CJP.

CJP further remarked, “If a case cannot be formed against someone then how can we punish them?”

Earlier, incumbent Islamabad IG Jan Mohammad had been suspended on verbal orders of PM Khan over not picking phone of minister for science and technology Azam Swati. SC took suo motu notice of the incident and quashed the controversial suspension.
