Pakistan, Tajikistan to cooperate in energy sector

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - Pakistan and Tajikistan on Thursday have signed an agreement regarding cooperation in energy sector during President Imam Ali Romanov’s visit.

Prime Minister (PM) Nawaz Sharif has said that Tajikistan President s visit would strengthen ties between the two Muslim states.

He expressed these views while addressing a joint press conference with Rehman in the federal capital.

He said that both the countries are determined for better connect among countries in the region. The PM said that Pakistan desires better relations with central Asian countries.

Nawaz said that Tajikistan holds importance of a gateway for countries in central Asia. He lauded extended land and air connections with Tajikistan. The countries have signed an agreement of cooperation in energy sector.

The sides today have also made a deal regarding hand over of prisoners.

Nawaz said that ties with Tajikistan were reliable however, further strengthened relations would benefit the both. The PM said that Pakistan is desirous of completion of KASA 1000 project soon.

It should be mentioned here that earlier in 2015, Tajikistan government has made an attempt to help Pakistan overcome energy crisis by supplying electricity. The project aimed at provision of at least 1,300 Mega Watt (MW) power from Tajikistan and Kazakhstan.

Tajikistan claims to be the third largest producer of hydroelectric electricity after United States (US) and Russia. The country has been propelling power targets for past as many as 15 years. In February, Tajikistan ambassador had said that the country wants to alleviate Pakistan’s crisis in energy sector.
