SC moved against appointment of Hafeez Sheikh, Reza Baqir
It claimed that SHC did not review the facts and appointed Hafeez Sheikh and Reza Baqir at Federal level.
ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - Sindh High Court (SHC) decision has been challenged in the Supreme Court (SC) of Pakistan on the appointment of Abdul Hafeez Sheikh as Advisor to Prime Minister on Finance and Reza Baqir as Governor of the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP).
The petition seeks the disqualification of both members as it stated that it s the violation of constitution and law by giving national position to someone with dual nationality.
It claimed that SHC did not review the facts and appointed Hafeez Sheikh and Reza Baqir at Federal level.
It was mentioned in the petition that it is clearly defies the SC’s order to appoint someone with dual nationality. It has been requested that court disqualifies both members from their respective charge.
On May 4, PTI led federal government appointed Dr Reza Baqir as the governor of the SBP.
A Harvard and Berkeley University of California alumnus, Dr Baqir has been with the IMF since 2000 and is presently the Fund’s senior resident representative
in Egypt. He has previously served as the head of the IMF Mission for Romania, and as Head of the Fund’s Debt Policy Division.
On April 18, PM Imran Khan in a major cabinet reshuffle appointed Dr Abdul Hafeez Sheikh as advisor to PM on Finance. The new appointment came after former Finance Minister Asad Umer stepped down from his post.
He got his doctorate from Boston University USA and remained Professor at Harvard University.
In 1990s Dr Sheikh enjoyed the portfolio of Director Economic Operations at World Bank in KSA and represented World Bank in more than 21 countries.
Dr Abdul Hafeez Sheikh was Federal Minister for Privatization and investment in 2003-2006 and Sindh’s Finance and Planning Minister in 2000-2002. He also held portfolio of 20th federal Finance Minster in year 2010-2013. At that time 34 transactions of $5 billion were made in privatization sector. He remained active in politics and was elected as a Senator by PPP.
