Delegation of IMF paid visit to headquarters of NEPRA.

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – International Monetary Fund (IMF) is mounting pressure on incumbent Pakistani government to hike electricity tariff.

As per details garnered, delegation of IMF paid visit to headquarters of National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) and reviewed current laws body.

Sources privy to development told our correspondent that IMF expressed grave reservations over line losses, non-payments and soaring deficit.

The delegation inquired why final authority to hike power tariffs rests with the federal govt. The delegation also asked why summary aimed at increasing electricity power was not implemented thus far.

The delegation proposed to craft such legislation which ensures implementation of NEPRA’s proposals in as many as 15 days. Upon this, officials of power regulatory body apprised visitors that NEPRA does not have jurisdiction to amend laws.

The delegation of IMF also suggested to slash duration of submission of NEPRA’s progress report from 30 days to 15 days.

The economists have warned federal govt that IMF’s proposal—if implemented—will increase cost of doing business.
