SC forms committee for issuance of CNICs to transgender community within 15 days

LAHORE (Dunya News) - The Supreme Court on Monday formed a committee for the issuance of Computerized National Identity Cards (CNICs) to the transgender community within 15 days.

The hearing of the suo motu notice, headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar, was held in SC Lahore registry. Akhwat Foundation’s Dr Amjad Saqib and Punjab Chief Secretary appeared before the court.

“The CNICs of transgender people should be formed while following the one-window process. I will monitor the entire process myself,” the CJP remarked.

He emphasized that abusive and rude behavior with the transgender people will not be tolerated.

“We will formulate such a system that will provide justice to these people at their doorstep. The transgender person who possesses a CNIC should be provided right to vote. They are a significant part of the society,” maintained the Chief Justice.

“Whether the government makes effort for them or not, the judiciary will do whatever it can,” he asserted.

On Saturday, transgender people briefed the CJP about non-issuance of CNICs to them during his visit of to Fountain House Lahore.
