ATC handed over four counts of death penalty to accused Imran Ali Zainab rape case

LAHORE (Dunya News) – Prosecution in Zainab’s murder and rape case has decided to recommend public execution of the convict, Imran Ali, to the Punjab government.

Legal experts pointed out that despite the ATC verdict, the convict Imran Ali is granted right to appeal against the decision. According to Section-25 of Anti-Terrorism Act, the convict can challenge the verdict within 15 days.

According to the sub-section 5, the Lahore High Court (LHC) will be bound to decide the appeal within seven days. After rejection of the appeal to LHC, Ali can file appeal in Supreme Court and to President Mamnoon Hussain.

District and session judge will issue death warrants of Ali if his appeals for leniency are rejected by all forums. The judicial magistrate will then make sure to implement the execution orders in his presence.

On the other hand, Punjab prosecution department has told that there is no need for amendment in the law for public execution. Punjab government has the authority to replace the area of execution and it can execute the convict where the crime was committed, it added.

An anti-terrorism court (ATC) has handed over four counts of death penalty to accused Imran Ali in seven-year-old Zainab’s rape and murder case today (Saturday).

The verdict was announced by ATC judge Sajjad Ahmed at Kot Lakhpat Jail.

Imran was handed four separate death sentences after being convicted of the rape and murder of Zainab, as well as terrorism charges, prosecutor general of Punjab province Ihtesham Qadir said after a special anti-terrorism court passed its judgement.

Following the anti-terrorism court’s verdict in Zainab murder case, the victim’s mother Nusrat Bibi demanded execution of the death penalties be carried out in public.

"I want him to be hanged publicly at the place where he took Zainab," she told reporters after the verdict.
