Alarming rise in rape of women and girls in Punjab

(Dunya News) – In Punjab, there has been an alarming increase in rape of women and young girls with the year 2017 reporting an increase of 12.5 percent in such cases.
According to sources, 10,500 challan of rape cases of women and young girls were submitted during the year 2017.
Owing to the failure of the police to provide security and protection to witnesses, 2850 accused were set free, reported Dunya News.
In Punjab’s lower courts, almost 6,600 rape cases of women and young girls are under trial. Out of these cases, only 870 received on merit decisions by the court and the accused were sentenced.
On the other hand, police rejected 180 applications without any investigations citing them as ineffective. According to law experts, if witnesses are provided effective security by police, perpetrators of such heinous crimes can be brought to justice.
