State funeral for Dr Ruth Pfau underway in Karachi

The final rituals of Dr Ruth will be offered at Saint Patrick's Cathedral in Karachi.

KARACHI (Dunya News) – The state funeral for Dr Ruth Katherina Martha Pfau, who spent over 50 years of her life to fighting leprosy in Pakistan, is underway at Saint Patrick’s Cathedral in Karachi.



According to details, the dead body of Pakistan’s ‘Mother Teresa’ wrapped in national flag was shifted to the church from MALC Hospital.



President, Sindh Chief Minister, Director General Rangers, Inspector General Sindh and other prominent personalities are participating in the funeral.

Dr Ruth will be laid to rest at Christians graveyard.



The 87-years-old German-Pakistani nun died on August 10 when she was admitted to Marie Adelaide Leprosy Centre due to breathing difficulties.

In 1960, Dr Ruth decided to dedicate the rest of her life to the people of Pakistan and their battle against Leprosy. Patients from all over Pakistan and even Afghanistan came for their treatment in Karachi’s leprosy center. In recognition of her services to the country, she was awarded Pakistani citizenship in 1988.

She also received Hilal-i-Pakistan award for her work with leprosy patients in 1989.
