KARAK (Dunya News) – An oil tanker overturned on Indus Highway near Sapina area of Karak on Tuesday.

According to details, the tanker was enroute to Karachi from Nashpa oil field when the driver lost the vehicle’s control and it turned over spilling hundreds of litres oil.

Authorities immediately closed the highway for traffic as a result of which vehicles queued up to one kilometer area.

The oil tanker was stationed in an upright position on the road with the help of a crane and the spilled oil was covered with sand by the locals. The highway was later opened for traffic after removing the tanker and clearing the leaked oil.

This is the fifth such incident of tanker overturning in the country in two weeks.

On Sunday, an oil tanker carrying 50,000 litres of fuel overturned near Attock at Fatah Jang.

A day before that an oil tanker that was going from Karachi to Punjab turned turtle on National Highway near Qazi Ahmed in Nawabshah and caught fire however; timely measures did not cause any major incident.

On June 25, at least 206 people were killed when a tanker enroute to Lahore from Karachi overturned on the main highway while carrying some 40,000 litres of fuel. It exploded minutes later as crowds from a nearby village gathered to scavenge for fuel, despite warnings by the driver as well as motorway police to stay away. The accident took place in Ahmedpur Sharqia tehsil near Bahawalpur.

The tragedy marked a grim start to Eid, the celebrations closing the Muslim holy month of Ramazan.

Pakistan has a poor record of fatal traffic accidents due to poor roads, badly maintained vehicles and reckless driving.
