Nisar orders arrest of social media users ranting against army
Earlier this year, around five bloggers went 'missing' and were recovered in the days that followed
ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Minister for the Interior, Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan has ordered Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on Sunday to arrest social media users involved in ranting against military.
The minister said that humiliation of the military in name of freedom of expression is not acceptable.
The Constitution of Pakistan categorically states that criticism over defence and national stability institutions is not permitted, he stated. No citizen is allowed to get involved in an activity that maligns the army, he added.
Chaudhry Nisar said that targeting an honourable institution is not concerning but a serious crime as well. He ordered the security agency to act against social media users irrespective of their political affiliations.
Earlier this year, around five bloggers went missing and were recovered in the days that followed.
Representative of Human Rights Watch in Pakistan, Saroop Ijaz had said at the time that the government could not claim helplessness in the issue as it would eventually translate into government being paralyzed.
“Government can’t get away with it simply by saying that it’s helpless. That would actually mean admittance that the democratic government in Pakistan is completely paralysed. I don’t think they’d want to confess this,” Ijaz had said while conversing with Kamran Khan on Dunya News.
Civil society had demonstrated protests in different cities against the alleged abduction.
